Greene King Thanks. A huge thanks to those who helped on Saturday 25th when we hosted
the Greene King finals. There was much praise from everyone who attended and an
open invitation from Poblenou Enginyers to visit them in Barcleona!
Pitch Update. Summer Pitch programme will start very soon, this will mean that
some pitches are taken out of action for a short time. An email will be sent
out to coaches very soon with details of the improvement programme. This will
also be posted on the message board.
Note. The Minis area will
not be sprayed, neither will Sheepwalk which will be OK for training.
Bedfordshire County Show at Shuttleworth. The club have accepted an invitation to have a
stand at the show on 11th and 12th July. More detail to follow.
Biggy Ale-Fresco and Kitchen are a success! The new facilities were used for the first time
at the G.K. Finals day and but for a minor mishap to the 'Biggy Pier' were a
great success. Thanks again to Henlow Building Supplies and to Magnet Kitchens for generously donating the decking and kitchen units, and to Mike
for buliding them!

End of Era dawns for Under 17s |
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
This Sunday sees the
last time that the Under 17s will play together as a team. Next season they
will be joining some of the Current Colts to create a new Colts team run
by Stan Matthews and Richard Phipps. It is in many ways an
end of an era, as some players are not carrying on and Current Head
Coach Ray Weller and Team Manager Jerry Hall are retiring at the end of the
season. Jerry started with
Current Colts side, at Under 7s level in 1997, before moving down an age
group with his son after three years. Ray started this age
group at Under 7s in 1998 and since that time about 60 players have
played in the age group, as well as working with several coaches, including
Steve Torne and Andy Klugman in the early days. Success didn't come straight
away, but by Under 9s when Ray was joined by Matt Trigg and Jerry, things
began to take off with several mini festival victories and Cup finals over
the next few seasons. The move to Youth
rugby took some getting used to as it often does, but they were quick to
adapt and the peak came with the East Midlands Victory at Under
16s. This had followed a successful run to the final the year before . The
team also qualified for the Midlands Championships at Under 15s and were
unlucky not to make the final. About 14 of the team
represented Bedfordshire at County level and three went on to have
East Midlands Honours. Six of the current players have been playing for the
club since the start and most of the others, started as older Minis. This last season
hasn't always been easy, with several players deciding to move on. However
with the influx of new blood and three Under 16s, two of which have
achieved County honours at Beds Under 16s, the team has rebuilt itself
and although results haven't been the same as in the past, the overall
ethos of the team has remained the same and that is to have a great deal of
fun. Next season will see the work and effort of this season come to fruition
next season.. The 17s also enjoyed a
great afternoon last Sunday, where 60 people made up of players, parents and
siblings dined at the Viceroy. Every player was given a memento for the
season and four parents Mrs Cusack, McKenzie, Hewitt and Mr Stump were
commended by the coaches for their hard work in the background and given
presents. Jerry and Ray were
then lavished with well wishes and presents, which they would like to thank
everyone for. They both also received a framed commissioned cartoon
each, which must have cost a fortune. The party minus the
mums and most of the younger brothers and sisters then decided to retire to a
club in Biggleswade where more serious discussion and debate about the
previous decade took place over tea, cigars and mincepies....yeah right!
We think the day ended at about midnight. After Sunday the team
and coaches will meet for the last time as a group at the Club's annual
dinner. The future of Biggy
Rugby looks bright with these guys. |

Over
six hundred rugby players and spectators packed Langford Road on Saturday
when the Greene King Finals came to town. Twelve teams from the region and
well beyond had qualified for the finals which were held at Biggleswade
for the first time. The
much anticipated final of the Super Premiere League was a battle between
league winners Chingford 2s from Essex and the now famous Poblenou Enginyers
from Barcelona. Enginyers had arrived at Biggleswade just half an hour
before the kick off time, their flight from Barcelona being delayed. The
Catalonian side had a couple of players with international experience
including an Argentinian sevens player, giving Biggy a very cosmopolitan look
for the day! Enginyers
started strongly and went into a eight point lead before Chingford fought
back to level the score at full time. As the other games had finished, a
large well lubricated and vociferous crowd watched extra time, the first
time a G.K final had ever gone to extra time. A penalty two minutes from time
ensured that the cup goes to Essex and not Barcelona as the Catalans were left
with runners up trophy. Six
finals were played during the day, which saw one of the largest crowds at
Biggy for many seasons enjoying the spring sunshine and the new Biggy
Ale-Fresco outside bar. A
suprise guest was Irish and British Lions legend Mick Galwey who had
been speaking at a rugby dinner in Letchworth the previous evening. The
former Munster lock was delighted to present trophies to
the winning teams and added to the international feel of the day! Biggleswade
club had organised a raffle, the beneficiary being the Wooden Spoon Society,
a rugby charity set up to support disadvantaged youngsters. League
organiser Noel Younger was delighted with the day " Biggleswade have put
on a great day, I would say that this is one of the best Finals Days
yet" he said. The
message was posted by Pete
Biernis Subject: GK Finals day Message: We also had a very special guest at
Biggleswade for the Green King day and that was Irish rugby legend Mick
Galway 41 caps for Ireland and also a British lion from 1993 and 130 caps for
Munster. |

Colts tour |
||||||||||||||||||
|
Following last seasons French adventure, it is Holland's turn to
welcome The Colts to their shores. Biggy will play two games in The
Netherlands during the first weekend in May. The team will be staying in The Hague and travelling to their
first game on Saturday in Sassenheim to play Bassets Rugby Club. The hosts
were founded in 1978 and wanted to emulate an English club, (quite what they
will make of Biggy Colts is yet to be seen). With a game looming, and no name
for the team, it was decided to name the club after the chairmans dog! The
club have recently moved to an impressive new pyramid shaped clubhouse
and have a very strong Youth and Colts team. The Sunday game is against another dog-named
club 'Bulldogs Almere Rugby Club'. Almere is east of Amsterdam
and again have a very strong Youth side, and is another newly formed club.
Both teams boast a number of senior sides and have welcomed touring teams
from the UK before. While The Netherlands is not of the international standing of the
Six Nations countries, rugby is growing rapidly especially the Mini, Youth
and Ladies game. Former Biggy youth player Simon Pitfield recently scored
twice in the win by England Students over the full Dutch national team. Biggleswade will be taking a touring party 20 players, less than
hoped, but a long injury list has left some key players 'walking wounded'.
The tour has once again been organised by 'uncle Richard' who will make sure
that there are no visits to dodgy addresses in Amstedam and that the squad
has a sober time......some hope!

Biggleswade 2nd
XV 38 – Kettering 4th XV 33 |
||||||||||||||||||
|
It was a perfect day for rugby at
Biggleswade last Saturday. Bright sunshine, a large crowd, Dave’s new
Bra in full swing and superb pitch conditions following the recent rain. The A XV started with four subs but were
quickly down to one when the Vets opposition turned up short and asked to
borrow some players. Starting the match with the sun in their eyes, it
wasn’t long before Kettering’s large pack (20 stone to a man) muscled
Biggleswade off the ball and some sloppy defence allowed them through for
their first try under the posts, which was converted. Identifying that
Kettering’s strength was their forwards and weakness was their backs,
Biggleswade changed tactics and moved the ball wide. This resulted in
three tries in quick succession, the first from Danny Carter making another
welcome return to Biggleswade and showing he has lost none of his blistering
pace. The second was a cross field kick from fly half Joe Domagala,
collected by flanker Stuart “Tuck Shop” West (what were you doing out there?)
who broke through the Kettering defence to score under the posts and the last
was a fine example of pace and excellent handling when the ball was spun down
the line to winger Dean Bartlett who scored in the corner. Biggleswade
took their foot off the gas with fifteen minutes to go in the first half and
allowed Kettering in for three tries of their own. Turning round at
half time one try and a conversion up, Kettering were back in the lead. The second half started in pretty much the
same vein as the first had finished and Kettering scored again after more
poor tackling from the home side. Stand in Skipper, Mark Rastrick
rallied his troops and Biggleswade upped their game. Two more tries
followed from Danny Carter and Dean Bartlett and with seven minutes to go the
scores were even. Biggleswade piled the pressure on and pushed
Kettering back into their own twenty two. After several infringements
from the visitors, Biggleswade won a penalty five metres from the Kettering
line and a quick tap by “Tuck Shop” West, passed to Rastrick on the wing, saw
the burley full back batter his way through the defence to score in the
corner. Rastrick also had a good day with the boot scoring four out of
the six conversion attempts. |

The
Colts may have bagged five points and secured a top half finish in the
Herts and Middlesex League but this was a bitterly disappointing day for both
players and supporters alike. Late on Friday, Finchley Colts conceded the
game, giving Biggy a walkover 45 points to nil victory and the five League
points that go with it. The
North Londoners are second from bottom of the league and have had to postpone
a number of games in January due to pitch problems, which created a
fixture backlog. With a County Cup game coming up the Finchley
management opted to concede the game. The
positive aspect of this was that seven of the Colts were released for
Senior duties on Saturday with Will Priston, Dean Bartlett and 'Tuckshop'
West all gracing the score sheet. The decision made two seasons ago to
interate the older Youth, Colts and Seniors training has clearly paid off and
many of the current crop of Colts are expected to be playing senior
rugby next season. |

BIGGY
VETS NOTCH UP WIN NUMBER FOUR IN A ROW !! Friendly Match :
Biggleswade Veterians 7 St Neots A XV 5 |
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
After
last week's third victory on the bounce against the Staggerers of Huntingdon,
those Biggy Veterians had another home game and a local derby to boot this
week. This came in the form of those 'friendly' foes up the A1, St
Neots. On a beautiful sun kissed afternoon at Langford Road, the Vets
found themselves on a very hard bottom pitch and some elder vets just
couldn't decide on boots or slippers, what a dilemma ! Simon Rutt
took over as Captain in the absence of Shovello and this week there was a
resemblance of some kind of warm up as anxious eyes turned to look
over to see the St Neots side assembling, with the cries of " they are
half our age !!", "not many Vets there" and "think we are
going to get a pasting !!" It
would be fair to say that when Evergreen Greer kicked off and the St
Neots pack ran at Biggy in the first few minutes, most of the side felt
impending doom and a sizeable defeat looked on the cards. St Neots
certainly looked very impressive, big, young forwards and fast elegant backs
to boot. However as in previous weeks, Biggy have in this side found
something of a great team spirit and a real willingness to play for each
other. It wasn't a game for the purist and those who did make it to the
bottom pitch, were treated to a Biggy defence really digging for each
other. Time after time St Neots crashed through and there were immense
tackles from Sergeant Flacky, Pete the Young Shea, Spanish Rooky
and Jimmy Caulfield. Not so easy on a very hard pitch as well !!
Spritely Rich Cooper toiled away at scrum half all afternoon and what
ball he could dig out, was well kicked out by Evergreen. Up front, the
front three of some experience of Dave the Bra, Jimmy C and Burkey toiled
away giving 150%, but also knowing that Rutty had a few replacements.
It was also great to see the return of Del Cooper as well after a year away and
a debut for flying winger Wes. Wes showed some glimpses of his speed,
but had to withdraw from the fray with a knee injury, but this led to another
debutant Kyle, who certainly impressed. As Biggy soaked up the pressure
from the youthful St Neots side, there were big hits from the legend Richard
Kendall and Del Coops and at times it seemed Biggy would never get
out of their half. But in the dying moments, an excellent foraging run by
Kyle, let Biggy retrieve a line out on St Neots' 22. Well won by young
Shea, Biggy careered to the line and from the ruck, Spanish Rooky leaped (not
so high) like a salmon going upstream and scored an excellent try.
For Biggy's defence all half, the try was immense and deserved, and in
the last play of the half, Evergreen popped to conversion over and
unbelievably Biggy turned around 7 - 0 uo ! With
the sun in their aging eyes, the Vets knew the 2nd half would be more of the
same from the young St Neots side and luckily their were some replacements to
assist. But it was more of the same, as St Neots ran the ball out
more and more and used their very useful centre to punch some big holes. But
Biggy were not to be undone, some excellent pack work nearly led to a try in
the corner, now added to by Mark Marky Roberts and the Estate Agent
Alan. But as that chance went begging, St Neots came back and after
some laxed tackling, they scored in the corned but crucially missed the
conversion. 7 - 5. With the introduction of Jimmy Hart in the backs, Biggy
certainly had some added dynamism, Harty not having played since Christmas
certainly fizzed all over the park. Biggy came back and from a break
away from the young Shea, linking with the Squirrel Whisperer,
Youngy scorched through the smallest of gaps and looped a pass for
Rutty. Strangely Rutty kicked on the half volley, however Harty
followed up and the bounce went straight to him, (here is where the
ref and linesman disagree ), but Harty then passed back inside for Rutty to
score, a great try. But it wasn't, alas Mr Cushion saw nothing of Harty
putting a toe out of touch, but the ref did. After that more of the
same from the young St Neots side, who were aided by a very boisterous
crowd from up the A1, who it would seem were eager to get on the pitch as well
! As tempers frayed somewhat in the closing minutes, Marky Mark provided some
entertainment with the fastest walk back away from the entire opposition pack
after a slight misdeamour !! But the team's defence stood strong and although
St Neots threw everything in the end, Biggy held out 7 - 5 ! It may
not have been pretty, but Biggy fully deserved their victory and the teams
defence and spirit was awesome. Well done to those aging Veterians
!! Biggy
Veterians : Dave the Bra (Mudge), Jimmy C (Web Master), Burkey, Del Boy
Cooper (Estate Agent Alan), Sergeant Flacky (Marky Mark Roberts), Young Shea,
Spanish Rooky, The Legend that is Richard Kendall, Rich Coops, Evergreen
Greer, The WitchDoctor (Harty), Captaino Rutty, Dan the Man, Wes(Kyle), The
Squirrel Whisperer. |

Biggleswade 13
Stockwood Park 21 Midlands 5 East
(South) |
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
Biggleswade finished their league campaign for the
season with a gutsy performance against the league champions. With nothing at
stake for either side Biggleswade’s coach Stan Matthews rang the changes
bringing in three colts and Curtis Wilson at fly-half. James Ambrose started
at scrum-half as Ross Taylor had to attend his daughter’s dance show. Matt
Smith went to full back which meant that Mark Rastrick went away with the
second XV. The changes brought a lively look to the side who
dominated the opening exchanges. Stockwood looked very ordinary and wilted
under the Biggleswade onslaught. Full back Matt Smith punished the visitors misdemeanors
with one penalty and then another. Stockwood hit back with a penalty and then
a try to take the lead but it did not last long. Biggleswade’s backrow of Michael Haddow, Dominic
Knott and Jay Sinclair were a constant thorn in the opposition. A finely
judged kick by Curtis Wilson deep into Stockwood’s “22” led to a five metre
lineout with Biggleswade’s throw. Karl Marshall threw long to the back of the
line where Jay Sinclair powered over the line for his sixth try of the
season. Jay will be sorely missed next season as a promotion takes him to
Woking and a post as head of chemistry. He has often showed a taste for
alchemy on the rugby pitch! Turning round back in the lead Biggleswade were soon
behind again as Stockwood scored a well-worked try under the posts which was
converted. But Biggleswade continued to make their guests work hard for
victory. They could easily have scored on a couple of occasions. Dominic
Knott made massive inroads down the right flank and Dean Bartlett on the
left. Biggleswade as in the away tie dominated the scrums
with the match official adopting a very laissez-faire approach with the front
rows buckling, flankers breaking early and scrums wheeling freely. Ian
Robinson teamed up with Tom Griffiths in the second row so was lively around
the park. Young Michael Haddow who has played in every scrum
position for the Colts again impressed. He could have a long future for
Biggleswade perhaps even emulating coach Stan Matthews. Stan has taught
Michael everything he knows! The coach had a cameo appearance coming off the
bench where he had hoped to stay all afternoon when a hooker was needed. As
usual he did attempt to throw the ball in at the lineout when the touch judge
clearly indicated otherwise. It’s always worth a go! The penalty account against Biggleswade seemed
enormous but the man with the whistle is always right even if when he’s
wrong. Karl Marshall spoilt a good game with ten minutes in the bin for
persistent dissent. Stockwood capitalized with two penalties to ensure a
shaky win. Man of the Match for Biggleswade as decided by the
Ladies Lunch Party was the often unsung James Ambrose. In the absence of Ross
Taylor at the dance show James shimmered and glissaded around the park to
catch the ladies eye! Stockwood Park and Queens get promotion with
Kempston and Wellingborough OGs relegated. They are replaced by St Neots and
Stamford. Coming down are Long Buckby and Vauxhall although the higher league
still have outstanding fixtures. Long Buckby again conceded a match without
putting their boots on. They have struggled all season winning just one game
and giving a walkover to opposition teams more than once Team: C Maxwell, K Marshall (S Matthews), A Fage (J
Caulfield), T Griffiths, I Robinson, J Sinclair, M Haddow, D Knott, J
Ambrose, C Wilson, G Drew, R German, D White, D Bartlett (N Edenborough), M
Smith. |

Biggleswade
Rugby Club are again entering the Bedford Touch Rugby tournament at
Biddenham this summer. The Biggletts competed last season and used the
tournament as preparation for the forthcoming Colts season, with the games
played on a Wednesday evening at Biddenham Upper School. Coach Stan Matthews,
played in the tournament last season and would welcome involvement from any
of the current U17s, Colts or senior players. Touch
rugby is being promoted by the RFU as a summer competition and the Bedford
Touch tournament is one of the biggest, attracting twenty two teams last
summer. The
competition is managed by Bedford Blues and features teams from Bedford
Blues and others. The first game is on Wednesday 29th April and Stan wants to
hear from any potential players via the club website www.biggleswaderugby.co.uk The
Biggletts will enter, but a second Biggy side could be entered as well. |

Biggleswade Colts 22 Cheshunt Colts 0 (Colts Development Match) |
||||||||||||||||||
|
|
This
was the first chance that the Biggy supporters had to see the nucleus of
the team that will carry the Colts colours next season. The game had been
arranged to bring the U17s and Colts teams together for the first time and
with the coaching and management team of Stan Matthews, Ray Weller,
Jerry Hall and Richard Phipps prowling the touchline, there was fierce
competition for places. Cheshunt had bought only 13 players to a
sunny Langford Road while Biggleswade had a massive 26 players available,
with another ten players rested or unavailable or down at Wembley watching
The Hatters win. Colts
players Bartlett, Nott, Maxwell and Price had all played senior rugby the day
before while Micheal Haddow had been voted man of the match in the First XV
game on Saturday. The
Cheshunt team had played Colts all season and used their experience to pile
on the pressure during the first half, giving the Biggy players little chance
to get to know each other. The first half ended with no score and it took
Sasha Heath to score the first try following a driving maul from the 5
metre line. Biggleswade had bought on the big guns in the battered shape
of Dom Nott and with the home side now lending players to the under
strength Cheshunt spectators could sense that Biggy were now on top. The
second try followed shortly when a superb break from Lex Jackson on the wing
fed Morgan Gregory for the try. Gregory, was the youngest player on the pitch
and celebrated a good week after being selected for Bedfordshire U16s squad.
Biggleswade were now dominant and when ' Tuck Shop' West carved through the
Cheshunt defence and spun the ball to Nathan Jackson the third Biggy
try followed. Sam Joyce converted bringing the score to 17 points
to nil. The
last laugh came to the impressive West who charged 55 metres to
glide under the posts to bring the final Biggy try and bring
the score to 22 - 0. U17s
manager Jerry Hall was pleased with the performance although
horrified when asked to wear one of the Colts tight-fit
shirts. " This is a good start, there is a lot for the coaches to
work on but the team looked good considering that they have not played
together" The
multi tasking Colts manager Richard Phipps had run the line as well as
cooking the players dinner! Richard
thanked the Biggleswade players who turned out in the green and white colours
of Cheshunt and hoped to learn more during the second Development game
against St.Ives on April 26th. The Colts prepare for their Tour to Holland in
May and welcome to return to fitness of Price and Phipps. Biggleswade Colts Development. Bartlett, Cooper, Corrigan, Cusak, Desidero,
