Biggleswade Colts – 18 Twickenham Colts – 7
(Friendly) 25/4/10

An early morning shower did wonders for Biggleswade’s well grassed pitch and the visiting West Londoners were keen to do the double over Biggy, having narrowly won the home tie at the beginning of the season.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs311.ash1/27698_386549822131_716097131_4474050_1827682_n.jpgBiggleswade started strongly and were at once dominant in the set  pieces but some sloppy defending lead to turnover ball and Twickenham’s leading try scorer fullback Dan Rose ran the length of the pitch to open the scoring. Once again, home ball was turned over and Biggleswade will be keen to address this area of their game. Many times this season it has been the dynamic duo of Gavin Taylor and Mike Haddow who have bludgeoned their way through defences, this time with the powerful Dom Nott finishing off the job. George Mathews stepped up for the conversion but just pulled the kick to the right of the posts. Although his territorial kicking was superb throughout the game, Matthews did not convert the three Biggleswade tries.

Despite the fact that this was the last game of the season and a friendly at that, both sides were fired up, so much so that the Twickenham flanker and Aaron Pickering were soon trudging to the sin-bin after exchanging pleasantries.  Haddow had been immense  at flanker and a typical break allowed Stuart ‘Tuck-Shop’ West to crash over the line to bring Biggleswade’s second try. More home pressure followed with Michael Hall and Sam Weller both having excellent games.

Twickenham were unfortunate not to score with a breakaway try just into the second half , but the referee judged the interception to have been from a off side position. Biggleswade scrum half terrier Will Priston was also unlucky to have a try held up following more Biggy pressure. The home side finally crossed the line when hooker Sasha Heath crashed over at the Langford Road end.

The Biggleswade lead was extended by Matthews who fired a penalty through the sticks with such venom that it cleared the safety nets erected behind the posts!

Twickenham’ scrum half was sin-binned for dissent, shortly followed by the Biggy captain Nott who had policed a disagreement in his own style! Biggy took the chance to play the young pups who had not seen much action this season with both Morgan Gregory and Will Harwood appearing in the second half.

A scrappy but entertaining game finished with Biggleswade winning and coach Stan Matthews pleased with the outcome, despite going behind so early in the game. Both teams retired to the clubhouse for an ‘end of season’ celebration fuelled by team manager Richard Phipps excellent curry. Richard added that this was the end of area but the start of a very exciting one for the club, as the Colts players that he has managed for the last eleven seasons progress to senior rugby.

Following the game Twickenham coach Andy Rees said “Biggleswade played to the referee well and deserved to win, we have had a modest season but this was an enjoyable game” said Andy, who had generously advised the referee all throughout the game!
Biggy now rest and recuperate ready for Fridays Club Dinner where they will be joining the Senior squads and awarding their end of season bling.

Bartlett, Cusack, Gregory, Haddow, Hall, Harwood, Heath, Loan, Mackenzie, Macklin, Matthews, Nott (C), Pates, Price, Priston, Pickering, Roake, Sale, Taylor, Warboys,  West , Weller. ( Hewitt – injured)

This game marked the end of an era which has seen the current Colts team lead by Stan Matthews and Richard Phipps evolve from U7s into the current squad. Huge congratulations to those players and coaches and parents who have come along for the ride!.......U7s to U19s(Colts)..... it has been quite a journey!

Midlands 4 East (South)

Biggleswade 36 Thorney 13

Biggleswade completed their league season with a clear cut win against bottom placed Thorney. But the early stages were far from easy and an upset looked likely. There were seven changes from the side that beat the visitors by over forty points six weeks ago and eight from last week’s team. With the Colts at Wembley it was a return to the “old guard” with Tom O’Connor, Nathan Thoday, James Gordon, Andy Claypole and Gareth Drew returning to the fold. Jonathan Hamilton started on the bench after his hamstring injury but was soon on the field and having a big impact. The game was played in front of a large crowd swollen by a gathering of Ex-Players some of whom had not visited Langford Road for many years. This may have unsettled some of the younger members of the Biggleswade team who are more used to playing in front of much smaller crowds.

Thorney started strongly and threatened an early score. But it was Biggleswade through Matt Smith who had the first points on the board with a well struck penalty. But the lead was short lived. Centre Nathan Thoday made a strong run into Tourney’s half but a pass went astray. Thorney didn’t have much to offer except for pace in a couple of their three-quarters and one of them ran the ball back for a try that was unconverted.

In the first half of the game the Biggleswade pack was under pressure in the set-pieces. But as the afternoon warmed up superior fitness told and the scrums were more evenly contested. Iain Jones dominated the middle of the lineout and Tom Hill the front often disrupting the opposition’s ball too. Flash Gordon at scrum-half off to university in Sheffield next year tidied up well and harried his opposite number.

In the three-quarters it was good to see Tom O’Connor back after a long, long absence from the 1st XV and student Shane McNeil making a guest appearance before his studies resume.

Thorney’s lead didn’t last long as Matt Smith landed another penalty – he really was on fire! The visitors regained the lead with a penalty of their own but that too was soon cancelled out. Matt Smith landed a monster kick and then another to give Biggleswade a slender twelve points to eight lead at the break.

Apart from another breakaway try from Thorney the second half was all Biggleswade. First Jonathan Hamilton was on hand to take the scoring pass from Tom Hill who said he did all the hard work to make it! Needless to say Matt Smith converted it. Biggleswade threatened to add another score soon after but a stray pass was ran in for a second try by the other Thorney pace man.

Stung by this reverse Biggleswade tightened up their game running in another three tries. Flanker Jonathan Hamilton went over for his second and Damian white pirouetted out of a tackle for one under the posts. In the closing moments Matt Smith rounded off an excellent personal afternoon with a try in the corner that took his personal tally to twenty-one points for the afternoon.

Team: C Avison (D Tyson), H Dix, J Caulfield, I Jones, T Hill, J Buttigieg, R Taylor, A Claypole (J Hamilton), J Gordon, M Smith, T O’Connor (G Drew), N Thoday, B Caulfield, S McNeil, D White.

Midlands 4 East (South)

Stamford 11 Biggleswade 20

Biggleswade finished off their away league matches with a solid win against Stamford. The two points take them above their opponents whom Biggleswade have not beaten away from home in recent years. The last league game of the season is against the basement boys Thorney who Biggleswade comfortably beat away.

Biggleswade’s “away” squad was packed with youngsters with Michael Hall, Sacha Heath, Liam Price and Will Franklin making their first team debuts. Michael Hall capped a fine performance with the try of the afternoon.

Stamford playing with the slope scored the first try when Biggleswade’s tackling let them down. They were certainly to rectify that sin later. Biggleswade almost scored in the first minute when an attempted clearance kick was charged down but the ball bounced the wrong way.

Instead it was Stamford who scored first thanks to some woeful defence. Another looked likely soon after. But the stentorian bellows from the touchline by Teri, Ross Taylor’s missus put some backbone into this area of Biggleswade’s game. Stuart West, Dom Nott and Dean Bartlett were prominent in the dumping department but everyone did their best to raise the standard of tackling.

This didn’t stop Stamford stretching their lead with a penalty for offside from twenty-five metres out. But Biggleswade then played some of their best rugby of the half and were rewarded with a try. The ball was recycled a couple of times before being spun down the line to winger Ben Caulfield. Ben said afterwards, “I stepped inside one Stamford player and then inside another before darting over the line”. It was Ben’s first try of the season at the top level in eleven starts nearly all of them away from home. Matt Smith added the two point conversion.

On the stroke of half-time Stamford stretched their lead with another penalty in front of the posts. Stamford’s battle cry at the start of the second half was to wrap up the victory early on. Instead they were soon on the back foot as Biggleswade turned up the gas and played some splendid rugby. Their second try was an absolutely scorcher. Stuart West playing in the centre who had looked really out of sorts in the first half soon put that behind him. He made some massive breaks and put his fellow centre Michael Hall in for the try. That’s what he said afterwards although from the touchline it looked like Michael did all the hard work with a forty metres sprint that saw him ghost through the Stamford defence. Matt Smith added the conversion to put Biggleswade in front for the first time in the match.

Matt Smith back at fly-half instead of the injured Graham Gadsby had a good match although for your correspondent’s taste kicking too much from hand. But he made sure of victory with a well struck penalty and then added a drop goal, the first of the season. With the clock ticking down Stamford launched a final onslaught. But they were denied a certain try when Dean Bartlett ripped the ball away as the player was about to cross the line. It summed up his afternoon – always in the thick of the action when required.

Tomorrow (Saturday) there is the final league match of the season when Thorney are the visitors to Langford Road. The match which kicks off at 3pm will be in front of past players who will gather for the annual reunion. Many of the Colts will be at Wembley for their league cup presentation so it will be a return to the “old guard”.

Team: D Tyson, H Dix (S Heath), J Caulfield, C Avison, G Taylor (L Price), J Buttigieg, D Bartlett, D Nott, R Taylor, M Smith, B Caulfield, S West, M Hall, W Franklin, D White.

Oundle 49 vs. Biggleswade A 13

With both sides agreeing to field players from the 1st and 2nd XV, it seemed Oundle played more 1st team members than Biggleswade which showed from the kick off.

Oundle won an early line out and cut through the backs with ease, scoring their first points but Biggy came straight back with a try following a scorching run from Damien White. This was the only points Biggy scored in the first half unlike Oundle who scored most of theirs. Following an injury to his leg, Mark Peace (Potton) was replaced by James "Butty" Buttigieg. Good runs were made by Dean Barlett, Jimmy Hart and Tom "Silly" Hill but due to lack of support at the crucial time, no more points were scored.

At half time, captain Ross Taylor decided to use the rest of his replacements and reshuffled the positions giving everyone a good run out which lead to stronger scrummaging and less points being scored by the opposition.

In the second half Biggy made several attacks into the oppositions 22 but with decisions not going their way and with bad ball retention, this lead to Oundle clearing the lines. When a decision did finally go their way, a penalty was awarded which Matt Smith kicked over the bar.
The final Biggy points followed many scrums and mauls in Oundles 22. The ball was picked up at the back of a scrum by Stewart West (Westy) and within a driving maul, the ball was passed to Sasha Heath who scored his first senior try.

The final score showed that Biggy did not play to the referees interpretation of the laws unlike Oundle but the younger Biggy players did show a promising first team future. This was the last game for Jimmy Hart who is now contracted to play cricket for which we wish him luck for the season.

Biggleswade: Howell (Hewitt), Haddow (Heath), J Caulfield (Tyson), Hill, Flack, Peace (Buttigieg), Bartlett, Nott (West), R Taylor, Gadsby (B Caulfield), Hart, Bass, White, Mackenzie, Smith.
