A
couple of Biggy legends have hung up their boots, firstly Simon
Barker has decided to retire from rugby, described by the late Jack
Chisholm as having ‘lightening acceleration’ and was a member of the
’91 Cup Winning side that swept all before them. Simon played in the
Bob Bakewell Memorial game and a couple of
Third XV games but has regrettably decided to retire from rugby. Matt
St Hill has retired from the Fire Service and emigrated
to Australia. Many of the younger current First XV will remember Reece
Ford, who played from U7s to U15s, Reece has graduated and “Turned
Pro”….joining the tough ranks of the PGA and hopes to make his
living from professional golf, we wish him the very best of luck! We
also wish Dom Nott the very best at his new club in Leeds where he is
working for a year while Nathan Thoday is
moving to Bristol and will play there next season.

Stamford
10 Biggleswade 25
If two teams are promoted Biggleswade will be one of
them. They made certain of this by beating nearest rivals Stamford so
now cannot be overtaken by the Lincolnshire outfit. Whether they go
up or not depends on who comes down from the upper levels. But at
that things look good.
It was a fast and furious affair on a grassless pitch in
front of a large crowd mainly from Biggleswade. Biggleswade outscored
Stamford two tries to one and the trusty boot of Rob Large added five
penalties from seven attempts. One penalty and a conversion effort
hit the upright and bounced back.
Right from the start the metronomic boot of the
Biggleswade’s fly-half kept the scoreboard ticking as he punished
Stamford’s mistakes. The match official was a very mature gentleman
but he controlled things well in what was often a steamy affair.
Biggleswade did well in the tight scrums often
destroying the Stamford pack. Lineouts too
were strong and the back-row dominant. Michael Haddow
restored to the side after a three match gap topped the tackle count
but Damo White and Dean Bartlett were not
far behind. Dean was recognised for his overall contribution by the
award of man-of-the-match for Biggleswade and the obligatory flying
pint.
But once again the defensive qualities were much in
evidence. Stamford love to run and have notched up more points than
Biggleswade. But as usual any whiff of a break was snuffed out early.
With three successful penalties Biggleswade were nine
points ahead before Stamford briefly threatened a revival. They
managed a scrambled try in the corner and the successful conversion
narrowed the difference to two points. But despite having the slope
advantage it was all that they could manage in the first half.
At the break Damian White was subbed
by Adam “Tink” Fage
allowing Dom Nott to go to the back-row. Dom will be away from the Club next
season as he has a job in Leeds as part of his “sandwich” course. Tink didn’t stay on the pitch long being binned
for a high tackle. On another day it would just have been a penalty
and a ticking off. Stamford also had two players off in the second
half as the atmosphere on the pitch reached pressure cooker
proportions.
Biggleswade scored their first try soon after they
turned round. A move down the left threatened Stamford’s line. When
it stopped the ball went right along the three-quarters with centre Michael
Hall crossing the line. Biggleswade might have had at least a couple
of other tries earlier but for the sharp eyes of the referee spotting
forward passes.
There was an exchange of penalties before Biggleswade added
the clinching try. Dom Nott powered over the line with the added
assistance of mighty scrum half Ashley Dunn adding the crucial extra
poundage.
Club Captain Jonathan Hamilton hailed the victory as
just reward for the long hours spent on the training pitch honing
team and individual skills. “Promotion was in our minds but it was
not the main motivator. We wanted retribution for last year’s defeat
over here” he said.
Coach Paul Rait was equally
upbeat at the post match huddle. “You played very well against a good
side. You played for each other and to your strengths,” he told the
team, “you saw where Stamford were strong and worked hard to stop
them
The one downside to the day was a hamstring injury to
full back Charlie Darlow. A prognosis is
awaited from physiotherapist Megan before the full extent of the
damage is known.
Next week there is a break from competitive rugby
before the visit of Queens to Langford Road followed by a final away
trip to Rugby St Andrews.
