Midlands East (South) A

Biggleswade 8 St Ives 10

Once again Biggleswade lost by two points – the fourth time this season – with the visitors converting a penalty with a minute left on the clock. With nine changes from last week Biggleswade looked substantially below par and struggled for most of the game.

The excuses from the unavailable were wide and varied. They included an office party in Spain, Christmas shopping with the other half, a school reunion, abduction by an alien and an elephant had sat on the car. Only Karl Marshall had a “legitimate” excuse having been banned by the Club for his red card last week.

Biggleswade were rocked by an early score. The St Ives number ten opened up the Biggleswade defence like the Red Sea parting for the Israelites. The try under the posts was converted with just three minutes on the clock. The backrow made certain this did not happen again with some determined tackling on him but it left gaps elsewhere.

After the joy and jubilation against Rushden the pack suffered terribly in the scrums and any clean ball was disrupted time again. In fact they lost the first two against the head and little went right for them. The line outs were better with James Kendall again very firm whether catching cleanly for a drive or tapping off the top to the scrum half. It was a similar story in the mauls where the Biggleswade pack drove hard and made good ground.

Biggleswade had a couple of chances to cut the deficit but the first penalty attempt went wide and the second was put in to the corner. But despite going close to getting over the line they came away empty handed. When the ball was punted long by St Ives Biggleswade looked threatening with Damian White always safe under the high ball at full-back. He was ably supported by his wingers Will Roake and Nic Edenborough. Certainly a contrasting pair in many ways but having pace when given room. It was the speedy Gavin Taylor who scored Biggleswade’s try. The flanker was on the end of a three-quarter move and crossed for the touchdown ten metres in.

Having ignored his prowess in earlier matches skipper Ross Taylor asked prop Dave Tyson to kick a penalty late in the second half. The kick was successful but now in front could Biggleswade hang on for the final few minutes? The answer was unfortunately “No” as a reckless challenge in front of the posts meant a kickable penalty and a yellow card for the miscreant. With the kick over Biggleswade had less than a minute to try and grab a last gasp story. But it was beyond them.

St Ives’ coach recognised Ross Taylor as Biggleswade’s man-of-the-match. It was just reward for someone who always gives 100% commitment to the cause.

Team: D Tyson, M Haddow, A Fage(A Burke) J Kendall, C Avison, G Taylor, A Rook(T Farron), J Buttigieg R Taylor, G Gadsby,W Roake,  T Ruffle, B Caulfield,  N Edenborough D White.

Saturday there is an away trip to St Neots who won the home tie 12 – 10. Hopefully Biggy can take the points to finish the year on a positive note.

Colts grind to win in Cup.

Braintree 7      Biggleswade 7

Biggy go through on away team rules

Glorious conditions greeted the Colts on Sunday. The two teams made the most of it with a show of fast running,  end to  end, non stop, rugby. The match seemed to over in seconds and a great day was had by all....

Sorry wrong match, wrong planet!  This was a dour affair, on an mire of a pitch, which meant that it became a battle of wills between the two sets of forwards. Underfoot conditions made it impossible for much flowing rugby.

There were constant stoppages throughout, which made the spectacle a turgid affair for every spectator of both teams, and difficult for the teams themselves.

Biggy won the match and progressed to the next round as under the rules the away team goes through if it is level at full time. However it must be said that Biggy were the better team throughout and should have scored more tries, before the last ten tense minutes after Braintree had equalised. There defence was again immense today throughout, but again a little more expansion at vital times, may have prevented such a tight ending when Braintree got on top.

Route one rugby can work, but it is relatively easy to defend, it also tires out the forwards. To bring the backs more into game, although the pitch conditions weren't easy, takes some of that pressure away and they might have run in another try or two.

Bartlett scored in the first half after a well judged break and Matthews converted. The match became disjointed after that, before the home team levelled in the last quarter. A nervy ten minutes ensued with Braintree piling on the pressure, as they knew they need to win, but as said before immense defence from every member of the team and maybe a touch of luck got them through.

Midlands East (South) A

Wellingborough OGs 3 Biggleswade 35

Biggleswade bounced back from last week’s disappointing result with a comfortable win over lowly Wellingborough OGs. Preparations were not ideal with six changes from last week’s team and several players got lost on the way to the ground. So with little time for a thorough warm up it was no surprise that the opening minutes were very even.

Biggleswade were not able to play their colts (Dom Nott, Will Roake, Dean Bartlett) as they had an important cup tie the next day. Tom Hill (shoulder injury), Graham Gadsby (son’s quality time) and Nathan Thoday (art exhibition) were all unavailable. One of the replacements Mark Rastrick was quickly called in to action when converting a successful penalty. OGs struck back with one of their own before Biggleswade scored their first try.

The match was interrupted for fifteen minutes while an injured Wellingborough player was attended to. As it was thought best not to move him until expert medical expertise was available the game was moved to an adjacent pitch. Biggleswade continued where they had left off with a number of good inter-passing moves. The opening try came from a five metre penalty with Ian “Robbo” Robinson taking the crash ball over the line. From the restart Biggleswade again threatened with a good three-quarter move in which both wingers Taig Norman and Gareth Drew were involved.

Taig Norman was concerned in the build up to the next try. He made good ground down the left wing. When stopped centre Ben Caulfield was on hand to carry on the move and give a scoring pass to Ian Robinson to crash over the limne. Having been the hero Taig was now the villain and given a ten minute cooling off period after calling the referee something other than “Sir”.

Biggleswade didn’t miss the absent player running in another try this time by right winger Gareth Drew back in the side after a lengthy lay-off with a strained fetlock. The forwards were involved in try number four. They had a mighty shove before James Buttigieg broke away with the ball. Captain Ross Taylor was in close support to finish off the move with a try in the corner.

Tom Farron who had a good game all afternoon with some excellent tackles and turnovers was heavily involved in the fifth try. But it was the pace of Taig the Marauder who finished off the move. Damian White added the conversion in the tricky wind. He later missed an absolute sitter in front of the posts for not the first time this season. Perhaps there is a message for the skipper here?

OGs had their best passage of play and looked dangerous but Biggleswade defended well. They then broke out and went down the other end and scored. Russell German had the ball when he crossed the line for the touchdown. A frustrated defender made a rash tackle and a melee ensued. Karl Marshall one of the last players to arrive at the scene received a red card as did an OG player.

James Kendall won the accolade as man-of-the-match for an all-round performance. He won ball at the lineout, worked hard in the scrums and showed a good pace around the park with ball in hand. He also passed well and tackled hard!

Team: A Burke, K Marshall, A Fage, (D Tyson,) J Kendall, I Jones, I Robinson, J Buttigieg (D Not)t, T Farron, R Taylor, M Rastrick, G Drew, (W Roake), R German, B Caulfield,  T Norman, D White.

Tomorrow (Saturday) there is a home league match against St Ives who Biggleswade beat 24-12 in the away tie on their sloping pitch. With three matches remaining in the first half of the league structure Biggleswade need to win two to be sure of playing in the top half of the league in the New Year. Remaining fixtures are St Neots (away) and Westwood at home on 9th January 2010. In between there is an away Bedfordshire Cup match against Sharnbrook who won last year.

Is the match still on? A question that occasionally gets asked if weather conditions are poor. It is the host club or referee who decides if a game is played or not. Sometimes it is left late to make the decision, not helpful of the journey is a long one (like Stoneygate last year or London Welsh for the Colts!)

Usually, it is frozen or flooded pitches that are the only problems.

If in doubt always check the message board before setting out!
