Don’t forget Six Nations games will
be shown at the Club
on the big screen
Match
report for Saturday 27th February.
On
a warm Saturday afternoon with very little wind, Biggleswade
travelled over to Letchworth for this local derby.
Biggleswade
started the stronger with some invasive running from Tom Farron in
the second row supported by his colleague Kyle Loan. The
forwards dominated early on to push the home side back into their own
twenty two. The forwards drove the ball on early in the game
resulting in Andi Davies scoring his first try in several weeks after
a long break due to injury. Phil Elcock converted. The
second try came from another forwards surge into the opposition half
when stand in Captain Andy Claypole battered his way through the
Letchworth defence to touch down for the score. Biggleswade
were always the stronger side in the first half and Letchworth never
looked like scoring.
In
the second half, Biggleswade allowed the home side in to their twenty
two and fifteen minutes of sustained pressure from the home team was
repelled excellently. The Biggleswade defence was extremely
well organised and Letchworth were repelled over and over
again. Turning the tide, the visitors increased the pressure
and eventually Nathan Thoday barged his way over the line in the centre,
the conversion by Luke Bass finishing off the score.
Early
in the last quarter, Fly Half Phil Elcock was replaced by Mark
Rastrick, who was sidelined from his normal position as Captain and
Fly Half due to torn shoulder ligaments, and didn’t expect to play.
Elcock had had an excellent game, using the speed and natural
talent of the backs around him. Gavin Taylor at full back being
the one who stood out the most. Rastrick, known for his kicking
game didn’t disappoint, pushing Letchworth back into their own half.
A lineout just outside the Letchworth twenty two gave Rastrick
the opportunity he needed to get some points on the board with a
cheeky drop goal.
With
five minutes to go, Michael Haddow at back row battered his way
through the defence, popping the ball inside to Rastrick who
unwittingly passed the ball to Hooker Karl Marshall. This was
probably the most unpopular decision of the game as Marshall celebrated his try into
the early hours of Monday morning.
Other
player of note were Ben “Chewy” Hewitt at prop, who more than coped
against his opposite number and Jonny Pearson, playing at scrum half
for the first time. Jonny had an excellent game and showed how
versatile he is, having played at flanker, hooker and wing so far
this season. This was arguably his best performance to date and
scrum half is by far his best position.
With
the score finishing 30 points to 5 in Biggleswade’s favour, this sets
them up nicely for the semi final against either Saffron Walden 3rd
team who narrowly beat Biggleswade in the league or Harlow
4 team, who Biggy have yet to play.
Saturday
sees the 2’s away at Royston for their league encounter.
Royston failed to field a side last time, so Biggleswade are
looking forward to meeting this enigmatic opposition.
Captain,
Rastrick said after the game: This side grows every week; as
individuals, we may not be the best players in the club, but as a
team we take some beating. Bring it on if you dare!!!
Biggleswade:
Howell, Marshall, Flack (Hewitt), Loan, Farron, Price, West (Haddow),
Claypole, Pearson, Elcock (Rastrick), Bartlett, Bass, Thoday, Davies,
Taylor.

Midlands 4 East (South)
Biggleswade 12 Stamford 17
In the last
moment of the match Biggleswade were denied a pushover try to clinch
the match by the referee’s interpretation of a scrimmaging law. It
was the second time that they had been denied the rewards of a strong
drive so justice was not done.
Before the match
started Biggleswade were rocked by the late drop out of giant lock
Iain Jones detained by parental duties. Hammy Hamilton, Ben
Caulfield, Mark Rastrick, Russell German, Jimmy Hart and Ian Robinson
were also all sidelined from last week’s away side. These changes may
have caused the lack luster start that saw Stamford race in to a
twelve point lead with two tries. A stern talking to behind the posts
injected more fire into the performance. But this was dented when
second row Tom Farron was sin-binned for a “professional” foul at a
line-out. At the level Biggleswade play at ineptitude is more common
than professionalism!
After the break
when Tom Farron was back on Biggleswade got their first try. The pack
put on a big drive at a scrum five and number eight Dom Nott did the
rest for his seventh try of the season. But the wheels soon came off
again as Tom Ruffle was dispatched for a cooling down session after
being disrespectful of the match official. Stamford promptly scored
their third try to stretch their lead again.
Biggleswade rang
the changes with Michael Haddow on to hook, Carlton Avison to the
second row and Tom Farron to flanker in place of Dean Bartlett. The pack
then had another mighty shove. Stamford’s back row splintered in all
directions but Biggleswade were penalized. It was not at all clear
for what for.
But the ball was
not cleared far from the penalty and Biggleswade soon got the score
they deserved. Full back Nic Edenborough getting his first try of the
season. The tall number fifteen hacked the ball through and won the
race for the touchdown by a fingertip. He also pulled off some
excellent tackles. If only he was available every week!
As the clock ticked
down Biggleswade continued to press hard and almost scored another
pushover try. But with the line at their mercy and Stamford in
disarray they choose to drop the scrum! Well that’s what the referee
said they did and he is the sole arbiter of fact.
Team: D Howell (C
Maxwell), H Dix, D Tyson, T Farron, T Hill, D Bartlett (C Avison), J
Buttigieg, D Not, J Gordon, G Gadsby, D White, T Ruffles, W Roake, J
Daisley, N Edenborough.
Saturday weather
permitting there is another home match this time against Stoneygate.
The Leicester side lost only one match in the pre-Christmas league
ties. But if Biggleswade hit top form a close match could be in
prospect.
Datchworth Colts – 5
Biggleswade Colts – 22
(Herts & Middlesex
Leagues)
This league game should
have turned in the hosts favour thirty minutes into the game when,
during an extraordinary 2 minute period, the Hitchin based referee
yellow carded four, yes four, Biggleswade players for seemingly
innocuous infringements.
The heavily sanded,
waterlogged and mud bound pitch helped neither side and for the first
quarter the game failed to flow with the ground echoing to the shrill
whistle from the referee. Biggleswade opened their account with the
powerhouse that is Dom Nott picking up from the scrum and wadding
through the mud to score, the reliable boot of George Matthews
converted. Matthews went on to have a good game with pin point kicks
gaining territory every time.
Then came the yellow
cards, first to go was Gavin Taylor, followed by a procession
including Hawkins, Mackenzie and Matthews. The referee had made his
point, although what point that was could not be fathomed out by
either set of players or coaches. This all happened with Biggleswade
defending their try line but bizarrely the referee chose to send off
four players but not award a penalty try to Datchworth!
Inevitably, with only 11
players the Biggy defence was under pressure and Datchworth scored
but failed to convert. Then came the Biggy fight back worthy of
Agincourt with the forwards leading the charge . Stuart West drove
over the line to bring the score to 5 -11 at half time with Biggy
still having four less players on the pitch.
With injustices
galvanising the visitors, Neil Mackenzie returned to the action and
scored with the conversion just going wide. This was a forwards
dominated game and neither the Datchworth or Biggleswade backs saw
much of the ball with both sets of coaches questioning the decision
making at times. As the pitch deteriorated to almost dangerous
conditions Biggy piled on the pressure and it was fitting that
captain Nott charged over for the final score of the game gaining a
bonus point.
Datchworth coach Jeremy
Gilliam said afterwards “This was a close game in terrible
conditions, Biggleswade forwards dominated and the defence was
immense, Datchworth backs were given no space and squandered
chances”.
Biggleswade Colts manager
Richard Phipps was full of praise for the heroic performance even
within his many years of rugby experience had not seen eleven players
defend like demons and them go on to score!
When asked on the refereeing
performance neither side would pass comment.

Biggleswade came down with a bump after a
run of three large wins. But a converted try in the last minute
flattered the hosts. As it was the longest away trip of part two of
the league campaign some regulars were unable to make the early coach
start. It was in the three-quarters that Biggleswade were most
depleted with Graham Gadsby, Will Roake, Dean Bartlett and Taig
Norman all sidelined from last week’s starting line-up.
Although arriving in plenty of time for a
good warm-up Biggleswade were rocked by an early Oadby score up the blind
side. Worse was to follow with centre Russell German binned for
disputing the referees interpretation of “holding on”. Oadby managed
just a penalty while he was on the bin suggesting that he should have
stayed off longer. Oadby managed another try before the break to be
thirteen points clear.
The closest that Biggleswade got to a
score were a couple of penalty attempts from Dave Tyson one of which
hit an upright. Dave complained afterwards that he was not used to
kicking on such a flat perfect pitch. Oadby share their facilities
with Leicester Tigers who maintain the ground and paid for the
£400,000 artificial pitch that the game was played on.
The pack went well all afternoon with
Iain Jones, Hammy Hamilton and Tom Hill winning good ball in the lineout.
Silly Hill for his contributions and his more mature game earned him
the man-of-the-match award. This accolade he enjoyed immensely
especially as it was a flying pint naked allowing him to display his
tackle of which he is very proud.
There were some good rolling mauls and
the scrums were solid once the front rows became engaged. In the
front row Dave Tyson upset his opposite number so much that he
attempted retribution on the referee’s blindside. For once hooker
Harry Dix had a quiet game but Callum Maxwell was solid all
afternoon.
In the three-quarters Damian White gave a
hundred percent but had little opportunity to shine. On the other
wing the hard head of Johnny Daisley saw off an Oadby centre. He left
the field in a very groggy state following an accidental clash in a
tackle. He was kept in hospital overnight as a precaution. Centre Ben
Caulfield who frequently gets on the team sheet for away matches was
replaced in the second half by Jimmy Hart making his first start of
the season.
In the dying seconds of the match after
Oadby had wriggled over for another try there was an injury scare to
full-back Gavin Taylor. He was at the bottom of a pile up and
suffered soft tissue damage to his lower spine area. An ambulance was
summoned as a precaution but Gavin was able to return a couple of
hours later to enjoy the evening. He joined in the singing and the
dancing including the strip-tease with the rest of the squad.

Howell), I Jones, T Hill, J Hamilton, J Buttigieg, D Nott, J Gordon,,
M Rastrick, J Daisley, R German, B Caulfield (J Hart), D White, G

Next Saturday Stamford are the visitors
to Langford Road for a league fixture. Apart from Russell German
absent again on another jaunt Biggleswade are expected to be at full
strength. The match kicks off at 2.15pm.

Biggy appoint new Club Manager.
Many members will have already met Jerry Hall who is the new
Club Manager. Jerry has been involved with the club for the past
thirteen years and has been variously, Minis press officer, a coach
and team manager. Jerry will be packing away his clipboard and team
managers coat in order to look after all things bar-side, and
welcomes suggestions for improvements. One of Jerry’s aims is to
increase bookings for the facilities, and the club are keen to
utilise the facilities especially during the day.
Fixtures are still not back on
track following the poor weather, luckily we lost far fewer home
games than other clubs. Please keep looking at

Biggleswade Colts – 48
Upper Clapton Colts – 0
(Herts & Middlesex
League)
Biggleswade Colts
belatedly opened their League season with a big score against Upper
Clapton who were laying second in the League after two wins against
Hertford and Datchworth.
Clapton arrived with only
13 players and it is testament to their ambition and skill that they
kept the score to below fifty points. From a 5 metre scrum, Biggy No8
Dom Nott crashed over for the first try after five minutes with
George Matthews converting. The home sides powerful forward dominated
and tries followed from Sam Weller, George Matthews, who converted
his own effort and a brace from Dean Bartlett. Biggleswade finished
the first half with a try from Neil Mackenzie. Whether it was complacency
on Biggleswade’s behalf or an inspired team talk at halftime, but
Upper Clapton took the game to Biggy in the second half, only
conceding two tries in the half, the try of the match from wing Tom
Warboys who got on the end of a slick move by the Biggleswade backs.
As ever the defence was ruled by Michael Haddow who earned man
of the match by putting in some big hits on his opposite number.
It was not quite one way
traffic, but with Gavin Taylor scoring at the end of the game and
Matthews converting, Biggleswade came away with maximum points.
The Colts next match is at
home on Sunday where they meet Enfield in the League
Biggleswade Colts. Bartlett (C ), Cusack,
Haddow, Hall, Hawkins, Heath, Hewitt, Holmes, Loan, Mackenzie,
Matthews, Nott, Pates, Price, Priston, Pickering, Roake, Sale,

Biggleswade 39 Dunstable 17
Biggleswade ran in another six tries but
were made to work hard for victory by a lively Dunstable second
string. On a cold raw February afternoon there was a lot of
entertaining rugby on show.
James Gortdon came in to replace the
injured Ross Taylor and had a lively game. Jonathan Hamilton moved
from second row to centre instead of Russell German and also had an
excellent afternoon. Dunstable’s first team play in Midlands 1 so the
XV they sent over was a mixture of some very wise heads and keen
youngsters.
Dunstable did not start well and there
was early pressure from Biggleswade keen to carry on the try scoring
habit of the last two weeks.
Scorning a simple kick at goal Damian White ran a penalty and
Dom Nott was on hand to finish off the move. Dave Tyson added the
conversion but the lead was soon under threat. Having made one
scything tackle Taig Norman’s game came to an abrupt end with a torn
ear that needed stitching.
Dean Bartlett moved to the wing, a
position in which he has had some experience, and Andy Burke joined
the pack. Dunstable though had a purple patch in which they scored a
couple of quick tries to turn the game on its head. Biggleswade were
in an attacking position one moment and back on their own line
defending the next. They couldn’t cope with the change of mode and
allowed Dunstable’s wily winger in for a try in the corner. Worse was
to follow as from the restart Dunstable raced the length of the field
for a second try.
If that wasn’t bad enough stand in
skipper Iain Jones was dispatched to the sin bin after some
argey-bargey with a Ds player who got similar treatment. But
Biggleswade were back level before the break. A Dunstablian defender
was forced to carry over his line and from the scrum five metres out
Dom Nott got his second try.
The second half was all Biggleswade. A
good restart saw them awarded a penalty that was kicked in to the
corner by Damian White who had an excellent afternoon with line
kicks. From the lineout Harry Dix went over for his fourth try in three
weeks. Dave Tyson missed the conversion narrowly but converted a
penalty from thirty metres out in front of the posts.
Biggleswade’s next try came after a good
break by Tom Hill. He stood up in the tackle and off-loaded to the
supporting players who carried the ball down the field. Ian Robinson
was in possession as the ball crossed the line. Dave Tyson landed the
conversion from the touch-line. Dunstablians got one back when they
cut their line to five men and worked a move around the front into
the corner.
Tired of the running game Biggleswade had
two pots at goal but bother were just wide. They opted for a scrum
when another kick was offered. Although losing the scrum the ball was
turned over and number eight Dom Nott added his third try.
In the closing minutes with the clock
ticking down Biggleswade found themselves under pressure and
defending hard. Skipper Iain Jones called for one last big effort to
hold the visitors out. But when the ball came out it was Biggleswade
on the attack. The ball went the length of the field with part-time
centre Hammy Hamilton the jubilant try scorer.
Team: C Avison (A Burke), D Tyson, I
Jones, T Hill, I Robinson, D Bartlett, D Not, J Gordon, G Gadsby, W
Roake, D White, J Hamilton, T Norman, G Taylor.
Next
Saturday weather permitting there is a tough away trip to
Oadby-Wyggestonians in south Leicester. Oadby were second to
Stoneygate in the first part of the season on their section of the
league. Although Biggleswade are unaffected matches not played from
the first half of the season will be played on the blank weeks in the
next three months. This is because points from these matches count
towards the final league tally.

Introducing
the new Club Manager.
To
anyone who has followed Mini and Youth rugby at Biggy since the late
1990s, Jerry Hall will need little introduction!
Jerry
started coaching at Biggleswade when his son Mike joined the U7s and
graduated through the age groups, becoming Minis Press Officer and
then Team Manager of the side through to U17s level.
"
It is a total change of career path for me after spending the
best part of the last thirty years in a Sales and Marketing
environment. However I know the club well after being involved for
the last thirteen years and am looking forward to the new challenge .
I
would like to see some clubs and societies such as Keep Fit and
Martial Arts start using our facilities again. We are also planning
to get Broadband access in the near future, which will not only be a
benefit to members, but also makes the club ideal for business
meeting and conferences"
Jerry
will start his new role very shortly and will be contactable on the
club phone number during the evenings. If you have any ideas on
improvements and other services the club could offer, Jerry will be
pleased to hear from you.
Dont forget Six Nations will be
shown at the Club
on the big screen
