Biggleswade 2nd XV 13 - 5 Hitchin 3rd XV

With three league wins out of three, a maximum 12 points and the highest positive points difference, Biggy 2’s sit at the top of the Greene King Super Deuxieme Sud League.

Saturdays game was much more challenging than previous weeks and it was late in the second half when Biggleswade finally crossed the line for a try.  They started the match with the gusty wind at their backs and put Hitchin under a lot of early pressure.  This finally resulted in a penalty some distance out, which skipper Mark Rastrick slotted, much to the surprise of some of his team mates.  For the next twenty minutes Biggy struggled with the referees interpretation of a ruck and were penalised several times for being off side, despite the ball seeming to be out and in the hands of the Hitchin scrum half.  The relentless penalties lead to Biggy being pinned inside their twenty two for several minutes before Hitchin finally crossed the line for their try.  Rastrick kicked one more penalty and missed two others in the first half to leave Hitchin trailing 6-5 at half time.

Biggleswade turned the pressure on in the second half and there were several crunching tackles from the back row of Harry Dix, man of the match Damien White and Pete Shea.  Locks Boffy and Goona jumping in the line out won plenty of ball and Harry and Damo were like a couple of terriers in the loose making breaks all afternoon deep into the Hitchin defence.  There were also some huge hits in the backs from Zack Pates and skipper Mark Rastrick relishing an opportunity at inside centre.  The back three of Phil Elcock, Tom Good and Morgan Gregory also had a great game.  Morgan was instrumental in setting up a try scored by Sacha Heath.  After spinning out of a tackle, Morgan popped the ball up to Sacha in support and the stocky hooker battered his way over the line to score.  Rastrick converted.  Props Stuart West and Luton Dave also played well, with Westy playing out of position at tight head.  Dave Bra made a cameo appearance to replace Westy with twenty minutes to go and a reshuffle in the backs to replace the injured (again) Steve Jones lead to Mike Hall stepping in at inside centre.

Rastrick said after the game. “We made hard work of things today but once we sorted out the pods in the forwards and took control of the game there were some flashes of the great rugby we know we can play.”

Saturday sees the 2’s at home against the Black Horse, a pub team with a reputation for playing some flowing rugby.  Kick off is at 3pm.

Biggleswade: Grubb, Heath, West (Howell), Smith, Jones (I), White, Dix, Shea, Jones (S) (Hall), Gadsby, Good, Rastrick, Pates, Gregory, Elcock.

Greene King Super Deuxieme South :

Biggleswade 2nd XV 57 Harlow 4th XV 7

After a very encouraging win in their first League match away at Royston, the two's had their first match this season at home.  This week they were against on the surface a very large and experienced Harlow side and with Captain Mark Rastrick falling foul of a back injury in the warm up, the portents did not look encouraging.  That was until there was a brace of Bakewell's spotted at the side of the pitch and Will was only to eager to fill in as scrum half, it would be fair to say that Will had his customary outstanding performance !

Facing a large Harlow pack, Biggy tore into the opposition like a twister out for something to prove and prove it they did.  Blitzing the Harlow line, Simon Barker rolled back the years and galloped in like a thoroughbred horse, whilst Harlow's backs grasped at thin air trying to catch him.  Next on the score sheet, was Russ German once again using his great upper body strength to plunder another try, in between Pete the old warhorse as he is was smashing large holes in the Harlow back line and opening space up for Will B to exploit.  Will doesn't need too much space and after one Shea break out, Will ghosted in in the corner ! This was followed up with a heartening Harry Dix scramble over under the posts and a Damo canter in the corner.  With Graeme Gadsby popping over three conversations, Biggy stood at half time 31 - 0 up.

It would be fair to say after turning round at half time, Biggy's forwards took their foot off the gas in the second half and Harlow as a result came back and at times played some very effective mauling rugby, which Biggy had no answer to.  Such was Harlow's well executed try that they fully deserved, this made Biggy sit up and take notice.  Once again Will Bakewell caused more damage with his effervescent, unpredictable running patterns and he was rewarded with another try, quickly followed up by young Zak Pates falling over the line after a more confident forwards move and a scintillating Damo try in the corner, give him the ball and some gentle nurturing and Damian is a force to be reckoned with.  There was another try by someone else, but it wasn't your correspondent !

An untimely neck injury to a Harlow back at the end, brought the match to a premature end.  We send our best wishes to the Harlow player and hope it is not too serious.

All in all another hard working and confident display by the two's and at times there really was some powerful, fast, attractive rugby played.  But at times, Biggy's dominance of the match was too much and their over confidence let them down.  There is a time to be more clinical as the points difference in this League come April may be the difference between first and second.  As it is, and it is early doors, but Biggy sit top of the League -  something they haven't done in five years !

Keep it up the good work boys.

Midlands 4 East (South)

Biggleswade 66 Aylestone Athletic 5

In their first home league match of the season Biggleswade brushed Aylestone aside as they ran in ten tries. The game was watched by a large crowd at Langford Road thanks to a pre-match display of tag rugby by the under 7s & 8s. The youngsters showed a great deal of enthusiasm and skill that was to be matched later in the afternoon by the 1st XV.

But the big boys did not have the best of preparations. Missing from the starting XV were Jonathan Hamilton, Adam Fage (both unavailable) and Andy Claypole (injured). In the pre-match warm up Lewis Gunn pulled up lame causing Dean Bartlett to move to the wing instead of George Matthews who played centre. Karl Marshall came off the bench to play flanker.

Biggleswade started at a great pace and were in the lead as early as the second minute. The ball was passed down the line to winger Dean Bartlett who raced away for a try under the posts that George Matthews converted. It was to be the first of eight successful kicks from the young centre.

The penalty count against Biggleswade was very high. But it reflected both the enthusiasm and the massive amount of ball that they secured. Nathan Thoday at the front of the lineout won both his own throw and the opposition’s. The ball seemed to stick to his hands as if they were covered in glue. But Biggleswade’s tackling was so fierce typified by skipper Ross Taylor that Aylestone spilled the ball time after time. The voracious back row of Michael Haddow, Karl Marshall and Dom Nott gobbled it up with panache.

The wealth of ball gave the Biggleswade three-quarters the chance to show their moves and they went well. Full-back Charlie Darlow had a great afternoon popping up in all the right places to secure a hat-trick of tries. Dean Bartlett added a second and there were other tries for Matt Smith and Dom Nott. Matt’s came from recycled ball near to the line for a short run in under the posts. Dom’s was a typical powerful run from the edge of the “22” straight under the uprights.

But the biggest cheer was for Stuart West’s effort. Westie played prop and used his bulk to good effort to barge over the line. Fellow prop Carlton Avison also played a key part in a try. Finding himself in the line in open play he gave the perfectly timed pass to keep the move going for another successful score.

Aylestone’s only score came just before the break from the font of the lineout when Biggleswade were already thirty-three points up. Aylestone’s line shuffled back making room at the front for a try in the corner.

The game seemed to slacken in the second half as the players felt the pace with several players from both sides getting knocks. But Biggleswade still managed to double their score with another five tries. Man-of-the-Match for Biggleswade was H the hooker. In the absence of pack leader Andy Claypole, H took on the role. Like the ex-soldier he is he ensured there was no slacking from anyone and led very strongly from the front. Coach Luke Bass said, “It was a cracking game and we were not at full strength.” There must already be sides in the league getting apprehensive about a visit to Langford Road.

Team: C Avison, H, S West, N Thoday, S Thomas, M Haddow, K Marshall, D Nott, R Taylor, M Smith, G Taylor, M Hall, G Matthews, D Bartlett, C Darlow, D Grubb, L Gunn.

On Saturday Biggleswade have a friendly against Twocester 2nd XV. Then there is a return to league action with matches against Westwood and Oundle both away. Oundle are currently second having put nearly sixty points on Wellingborough O.G.s so that will be a good one.

Greene King Super Deuxieme South.

Royston 2nd XV 0 Biggleswade 2nd XV 27.

A first League game season for Mark Rastrick's 2nd XV and a third away fixture on the bounce!  However something was different this week, the side would be playing a 2nd team and not more 1st XVs! After narrowly losing to St Neots 1st XV the previous week, the side were looking forward to opening their account at the Heath and the hard ground that is normally Royston's home.

With looking at the side it resembled a mix of youth, plenty of experience and some very wily old shifty characters !!  With the wind behind them in the first half, the side took advantage of the conditions and scored fairly early on when burly Russ German revelling as always as centre, cut with skipper Scouse and ploughed in under the posts for try one.  Converted by Scouse and Biggy had an early deserved lead.  Although on top in the pack, Biggy still failed to capitalise on all their chances in the first forty minutes, with Damo going close and the Greek One just falling short after showing a blistering turn of pace in the centre of the park.  Scouse popped over another penalty and with the back row of Butty, Shea the old one and Grubb, Royston were finding very hard to make any substantial ground at all.  Biggy turned round 10 - 0 up and facing the wind.

Playing into the wind suited Biggy in the second half and they were buoyed by the addition of some replacements especially in the form of Westy, Tom Good and Harry Dix, each bring some renewed energy to the side.  From the off, Biggy's forwards took control and scored their 2nd try of the afternoon, from a back of a ruck with Pete the old one picked up and ploughed over.  With the wind bearing against him, Scouse duly popped over the conversion.  With the second row of Goon and Boffy clearing up, life was particularly easy for Benny Caulfield at scrum half and he had a solid afternoon.  Biggy next scored when Westy sneaked down the blind side and plopped over for a sweet try. This was followed up in another forwards move, where Butty had a comical try after the Royston pack went walk about and like the parting of the Red Sea, Butty was there to fall over the line ! One of the easiest tries he will score this season and as he ran back he had the smile of the Cheshire Cat, nice one ! With Ras missing the last conversion, Biggy ended their scoring at 27 - 0 and importantly kept Royston to nil.  There were some crunching tackles made by Ras and Russ, some excellent runs by Sacha, Dave Howells and Luton Dave and Rutty made it through his first League match in 16 months since seriously injuring his achilles.

All in all a good afternoon's work and obviously those who attend training showed that their fitness works as it was clear to see in the last quarter of the match - who was the fitter of the two sides especially as Biggy were playing into the wind.

Well done lads, keep it up !!

Midlands 4 East (South)

Wellingborough O.G.s 5 Biggleswade 44

Biggleswade opened their league season with a convincing win against Wellingborough O.G.s. With a bonus point for scoring at least four tries they went straight to the top of the table. Biggleswade played with the blustery diagonal wind in the first half in warm sunshine. Ross Taylor returned at scrum-half but Tom Hill was ruled out with a strained ankle. Nathan Thoday filled in at second row for his first match of the season.

Straight from the start Biggleswade were on the attack with a sweeping move down the left wing with George Matthews in full sail. It was spot kicker George who opened the scoring with a well struck penalty after nine minutes.

Wellingborough had the chance to reply when Biggleswade strayed off-side but like their three penalty attempts into the wind it went wide such was the force of the wind.

The Biggleswade pack was on top in the scrums and won good possession at the lineout thanks to Nathan Thoday and Sam Thomas. But it was in the three-quarters that they always looked the most dangerous especially when the ball was spun wide along the line.

But in defence they looked good too. Burly centre Jonathan Hamilton who spent most of last season in the back-row made some crunching tackles. Also high in the tackle count were the flankers Michael Haddow and Dean Bartlett who were always in the thick of the action. Number eight Andy Claypole stirred up the pack with a few well chosen words.

Biggleswade had a purple patch in which they scored three tries and looked unstoppable. The first came after Simon Else ploughed over under the posts. Then from the restart with a clean catch by Nathan Thoday the ball was spun along the line and George Matthews raced away down the wing.

The third came as Biggleswade scorned a kickable penalty and called a miss move in the centre. Full back Charlie Darlow joined the line and crashed over for the try. All were converted by George Matthews who also added another penalty.

With forty minutes up on the clock Biggleswade added their fourth try to earn their first bonus point of the season. It was again the three-quarters who figured strongly with Simon Else scoring his second.

The second half was much harder work and Biggleswade could only manage another couple of tries. Charlie Darlow went over for his second and Dom Nott his first of the season within five minutes of coming on as a replacement. The O.G.s salvaged some pride with a solitary try early after the break. Coach Luke Bass was pleased with the way the side played but felt there was room for improvement.

Team: A Fage, H, (K Marshall), C Avison, S Thomas, N Thoday, D Bartlett, M Haddow, A Claypole, (D Nott), R Taylor (A Dunn), G Matthews, S Else, J Hamilton, G Taylor, C Darlow.

On Saturday Biggleswade are at home to Aylestone Athletic from Leicester. Two seasons ago Biggleswade lost narrowly to them both home and away. The game at Langford Road kicks off at 3p.m. with a pre-match buffet at 1p.m.

Biggleswade 17 Queens 12

The optimism continues at Biggleswade as a team from a higher level league was downed at Langford Road. It’s a long time since Biggleswade beat Queens but they undoubtedly deserved the victory. And they did it without five players from last week including club captain Ross Taylor (new arrival), Lewis Gunn and Dom Nott.

With eight players under twenty it was a very youthful side up against a street-wise Queens’ outfit that have always proved too wily in recent encounters that have been close affairs. The match started at a fantastic rate with plenty of action. Although lacking Dom Nott the back-row of Michael Haddow, Adam Claypole and Dean Bartlett had an impressive work rate whether scything down the lumpy opposition forwards or supporting the three-quarters in attack.

Biggleswade almost scored early on a couple of occasions. The power of Michael Hall in the centre had the Queens defence struggling to stop him. A break down the left wing had the crowd on their feet in anticipation. Biggleswade’s back line that includes the very youthful Gavin Taylor, Charlie Darlow and George Matthews has immense pace that should yield a hatful of tries between them this season.

The opening score came after a kickable penalty just outside the “22” was kicked into the corner for the lineout. The ball was won and quickly recycled down the line. The final pass was just gathered at arm’s length by winger George Matthews who crossed the line unopposed. Matt Smith standing in at fly-half added the conversion. Matt had a good game showing that although he may have slipped down the rankings Biggleswade has replacements in depth.

Biggleswade stretched their lead before the break with another cracking try. Stand in scrum half Ashley Dunn chipped over the top when in midfield for winger Gavin Taylor to pursue. His pace forced the Queens man to fumble allowing Gavin to gather and race away over the line.

After the break Biggleswade rang the changes in what was essentially a trial match. Stuart West gave Adam Fage a breather and Harry Dix also had a run out at hooker.

After using their big forwards to batter away at Biggleswade’s defence Queens got back in the match with an unconverted try. But Biggleswade stretched their lead again with another well worked try. Queens dropped the ball in midfield which was hacked through deep into their “22”. Recycled several times it was finally spun across the pitch for winger Gavin Taylor to get his second try of the afternoon. In the final moments Queens added another score right in the corner although the big winger appeared to drop the ball as he went to ground it.

All in all a very good performance by Biggleswade that should augur well for the league campaign which starts next week against Wellingborough OGs. Last season Biggleswade beat them twice scoring over seventy points with just three against.

Team: C Avison, H, A Fage, T Hill, S Thomas, D Bartlett, M Haddow, A Claypole, A Dunn, M Smith, G Matthews, M Hall, J Hamilton, G Taylor, C Darlow, D Grubb, H Dix.

The Club sends their best wishes to Club Captain Ross & Teri Taylor at the birth of their new son. Mason who has a breathing problem is currently still in hospital but he is making good progress.

Match Report Biggleswade Rugby Club

Vauxhall 10 Biggleswade 20

Biggleswade opened their season with a friendly trial game against Vauxhall. The Luton side has just been relegated into Biggleswade’s league. The score-line does not reveal the true scale of the win as Biggleswade scored three tries to Vauxhall’s one and that was an interception.

Biggleswade had several new faces with Lewis Gunn from Ealing making his debut for the Club at fly-half and showing some neat skills. Charlie Darlow at full back showed class and Justin Martin filled in at flanker. Aaron Pitman and George Matthews both ex-colts also made debuts.

New coach Luke Bass said, “We were missing several key personnel and other players did not perform as well as I am sure they can. But for a first outing there were some promising signs.” Forwards coach “H” (his full name is known only to his Mother) who played the first half at hooker was more forthright. “The pack stuffed them and their only answer was to go uncontested at the scrums. But fitness levels were encouraging” he added.

Young Gavin Taylor showed plenty of pace on the wing and on another day would have had a score as early as the fourth minute. Vauxhall scored first with a penalty but Biggleswade took the lead with a try from winger George Matthews after good work recycling the ball quickly.

Disaster struck when a stray pass was intercepted and run in for a soft try under the posts which was converted. But Biggleswade were undaunted. They almost scored on the left flank but were called back by the referee for a penalty in front of the posts. Scorning the three points on offer the ball was run and centre Michael Hall crossed round behind the posts. George Matthews added the two point conversion. Despite a heavy night without sleep stretched the lead with a well struck penalty.

There was just time for a very rare moment in the playing career of prop Adam “Tink” Fage. He scored a try! The ball was worked across the pitch from a five metre lineout and Tink was marshalled over the line with support from H and other forwards.

Team: C Avison, H (the hooker), A Fage, T Hill, A Pitman, J Martin, K Marshall, D Knott, R Taylor, L Gunn, G Matthews, M Hall, J Hamilton, G Taylor, C Darlow.

Biggleswade RUFC Gentleman’s Evening.

Friday 24th September  for just £15 per ticket we have comedian Geoff Jukes and entertainment from Karina and Morgan, here is just one of the many testimonials on www.sportsclubentertainment.co.uk (where you may also see the many attributes of the aforementioned ladies)

Just a note of thanks for Friday nights entertainment.

As mentioned, it has been many years since Tenbury Rugby Club has staged a "Gents Evening".

The gags were excellent and well delivered by your good self.

The ladies, Steph and Summer, were delightful.

I attended the match on Saturday [which we won] and the night was the talk of the touchline. It was clearly enjoyed by all.

We will discuss a ladies event at tonight’s committee meeting and get back to you. It would appear from conversations with the lads that there may be sufficient interest.

Thanks again. Tenbury Wells RFC

Ground Safety. Please make sure that both the Ambulance Gates are kept clear at all times when either matches or training are taking place. Moveable barriers have had to be put in place as on a number of occasions, vehicles have been parked across the gate while games are taking place, including the pre-season game vs Huntingdon when an ambulance had to be called. Keys to open the Ambulance Gates are on the main key fob kept on top of ‘The Monkey Cage’.

Coaches – the floodlights take a few minutes to warm up, this is normal, please do not stand and flick the switches on and off as all this does is trip the lights out and you will not have them for the rest of the evening!
