Biggleswade Second XV - 12

St Neots B - 0

Biggy 2s kicked off the season at Langford Road with a win over local rivals St Neots. With the wind behind  them it was the visitors who started the better , but good defence kept them at bay and Biggy pressure lead to a try from Nick Edenborough, 15 minutes into the game. St Neots had brought a B squad while Biggleswade had mixed Colts through to Vets, from young Ben 'Chewy' Hewitt to the vastly experienced Pete Shea. A number of new players their first start in a Biggy shirt and one to make an impression was Jonathan Hamilton who has just moved into the area while a number of former Colts players look likely to find themselves in the First XV, none more so than Domonic Nott who looked commanding at N08 when he came on as a replacement.

With just a 5 point lead at half time, Biggy changed a few positions around and extended the lead when Tom ' Doormouse' Raffles crunched through a couple of tackles to bring the points tally to 10, with Damo White adding the conversion. While St Neots had a player in the sin bin, Biggy pressured again with stand in captain Ross Taylor leading the charge while Seconds captain Mark Rastrick was unavailable.

Senior coach Stan Matthews was pleased with a win, and pleased with the new players who made their debut " This gave us a chance to play some people in different positions and winning the first game is a good marker to put down"

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Biggleswade First XV at home to Bedford Queens in a friendly fixture while the Second XV meet Dunstablians Fours at home in the League.

Biggleswade Second XV.

H Buckingham, J Buttigeig, J Daisley, A Davies, H Dix, N Edenborough, T Farron, R German, J Hamilton, B Hewitt, T Hill, D Howell, I Jones, C Maxwell, D Nott, J Pearson, T Raffles,  W Roake, P Shea, R Taylor (C), D White

Interesting days for rugby union as the new season starts with the game attracting record numbers of younger players, while all of the headlines concentrate on the Harlequins fake blood controversy, and with further revelations expected the story is not going away. Harlequins have admitted using fake blood to allow them to make substitutions and the RFU have set up a task force which will look at all aspects of cheating and gamesmanship at all levels of youth and adult rugby.

In common with many local teams. Biggleswade have a strong Mini section, who resume training on Sunday, but find that Youth playing numbers have fallen since the heady days of 2004. The number of young adults playing at the club has risen, due in no small part to the U17s and Colts policy of previous seasons.

No don't get disturbed, these Biggy players have not changed their spots, but on Saturday our three lads, Dean Bartlett, Stuart West and Dom Nott, all of whom are involved with the East Midlands U20's, took part, as invitees of the Huntingdon Stags President, in a  pre-season fixture to celebrate the Stags long awaited return home to the 'Race Course'. Stags, their new Club house and facilities, now truly open, will continue to play all their fixtures at all ages from this venue.

In a very entertaining game the Stags side 'Club' side just overcame the "Presidents Men" with the final score standing at 29-17.

Next time we see these lads it will be back in the more familiar Biggy Colours.

The Cheerleader Squad

http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs136.snc1/5812_98996637538_98855957538_2120850_7630971_n.jpgThe last Colt’s headline read “See them perform as you have never seen them perform before” and over the week-end of 4th and 5th July   a number of Biggy Colts showed nationally that they had both the muscle and athleticism to prove their worth in a different arena.

In front of over four thousand people   Biggy Colts players  Ben Welsford, Tuck shop West , Ashley Dunn, Owen Thomas, Stuart Phipps and Adam Domett,   demonstrated their strength and athletic skills as part of Sam Whitbread’s Cheerleader ‘s squad that participated in an international event which  took place in Brighton over the week-end of  4th and 5th July.

On the Saturday, Owen, Adam and Stu P supported their female colleagues Pippa and Kayleigh in a stunt routine orchestrated with the guidance of Ash and the others. Just before, they had been informed that they had been moved up a class from four into five. Ash who had taken on the role of ‘ Chief ‘ Scout’  cheer1.jpgsaw one team fail to catch one of their gymnasts and then witnessed an almost flawless performance by the next entry and  needed to withdraw  from the stadium (to the nearest bar it is rumoured) rather than watch his team mates put on what is deemed to have been the best display of their lives !!  The individualism of their ‘routine’ was judged to be so good that although finishing a very creditable sixth, it merited a special accommodation for their personal interpretation.

On the Sunday the whole team squad participated at their designated level 3. However before their participation they were advised that some of their routine   included moves of a level of difficulty that they were not allowed to include and could therefore not be marked, but they still chose to retain their performance as was, rather than try to change their routine at short notice. The full College side did however still finish a very creditable eighth.

When being interviewed just before they received their trophies   and asked which ‘Gymnastic Club’  they belonged to it was with one voice that all of the male members responded “Biggleswade Rugby Club”, which seemed to confound some of the interviewers.  It does seem however that if “ Dommett”  makes his choice of Essex UNI, then he is  a ready fixed up with a female partner to work with, who might still be able to show him a move or two.

All the College Squad had two great days and no doubt lots of photo’s and clips will shortly be published. However when asked for comment the utterances of Biggy Colts Coach Stan Matthews sounded more  like something that one might expect to hear more from “Waughy” ( lightly interpreted  as “ Streuth , god ‘elp us  !  ...

Next time around, I guess  they will be wanting to performing in a    Ballet”).

Chewey as well as Tuckshop, both  in  tuttu’s  ??

pitch slitter.JPG

The pictures shows Sheepwalk being slitted on Sunday, the blades penetrate to about four inches, the Club pitches were set deeper.

The idea is to get more air into the soil to allow roots to develop. The intention is to slit them again before the new season, this will be  a huge improvement on pitches that are already good. Also the worn areas will be re-seeded.

A big thank you to Mike for giving up most of his weekend to do the job and to Richard & Peter Kendall for the loan of the bigger tractor for the weekend.

 Biggleswade XV 29 Chairman’s XV 40

The final curtain came down on the season with a high scoring Chairman’s game. A try in the last move of the match gave John Thoday a win but rugby was the real winner. The free flowing game had everything with the only blemish being an injury to Simon Rutt that saw the need for another hospital visit for him.

It would be poetic to say that the Chairman’s team was a mixture of has beens, want to bes and never will bes! But that would be very inaccurate. In truth it was an assortment of vets, colts, current players and the talented with beefy brawn and silky runners – the ideal combination for a successful team. Both sides suffered from a lack of continuity with replacements coming and going from the bench at rapid intervals.

It was good to see six former captains of the Club turning out with three on both sides - Stan Matthews, Mark Rastrick and Ross Taylor for Biggleswade. Joe Jordan, Julian Davis and the ever-youthful Roy Greer playing for the Chairman’s XV.  Also in the Chairman’s XV was popular Jay Sinclair making his last appearance at the Club before moving to Woking for a new teaching challenge. Jay has only played the one season at Biggleswade but has made a major impact and will be missed.

Biggleswade did their usual trick of allowing the visitors a couple of tries early on with tackling being an option. But this was a subterfuge to lull the opposition into thinking they were in for an easy afternoon. Biggleswade quickly showed that anything the other side could do they could do too. They exploited a knock-on with slick handling along the line with speedy Taig Norman running round under the posts for the touchdown.

Biggleswade then cut the deficit to just two points as a wayward kick by the Chairman’s XV was run back by Biggleswade with Dominic Knott getting the try. The Biggleswade number eight then added another when the forwards shunted forward at a five metre scrum and Dom flopped over the line.

At half-time with Biggleswade 19-14 ahead both sides rang the changes which did not prove the best tactic for the home team. The Chairman’s XV rejuvenated by the half-time refreshments quickly regained the lead. They quickly added three tries threatening to romp away out of sight.

But Biggleswade struck back with the stars of the future showing the way. Dominic completed his hat-trick with a third try and Dean Bartlett turned on the after-burners to scorch away for Biggleswade’s fifth try. But the Chairman’s XV had the last word with the final score.

Biggleswade Colts 41

A dream start to their end of season tour to Holland saw Biggleswade run in seven tries against a young Bassets side on Saturday. The 25 strong touring party had travelled to The Hague the previous day and included coach Stan Matthews, manager Richard Phipps, club chairman John Thoday and general 'good old boy'  Les Sale. After a tough season a number of players were walking wounded including captain Stuart Phipps, and Ash Dunn who had suffered a knee injury in February.

Biggy forwards were dominant and tries came from prop Callum Maxwell, Adam Dommett, Will Franklin and flying winger Dean Bartlett, while the impressive Domonic Nott, who was voted 'player of the match' scored three.

The team were surprised to find the Bassets substitute was actually a Dutch women's international who came on during the second half. Mixed sides are allowed in Holland!

"We made too many handling errors, and should have scored more but it was a comfortable win in the end".  said Biggleswade's long standing hooker Tom Harwood. " We were given a great welcome by the Dutch teams" he added.

Bulldogs Almere Colts 10

Biggleswade Colts 59

Almere is a new town just outside Amsterdam and Biggleswade had a 55 mile trip to the ground. Hosts 'Bulldogs' were well used to visiting teams, having hosted many English teams and are currently just in the bottom half of the Dutch national colts league. Biggy had a few niggling injuries from the  game, less than 24 hours previously but were encouraged by the dedication of Liam Price, who was sporting a new hair style for the match.

Bulldogs shocked Biggy by scoring early in the game and taking the lead before a big crowd.

Biggleswade scored nine tries including a characteristic chip and chase from George Matthews colts holland 09.JPGmaking his return after nearly a season out of action with a shoulder injury. Matthews also converted two of the tries, it felt like he had never been away!

Other Biggy scores came via Charlie Darlow, Adam Dommet, Dean Bartlett, Owen Thomas, Will Franklin and three from 'Tuckshop' West whose bullocking runs were unstopable!  Darlow was carrying an injury from the previous week but was still able to convert five of the tries.

Bulldogs  were a much stronger side with a very capable inside centre who cut through the Biggleswade defence to score twice.

Biggleswade forwards were unable to secure the rucks as well as the previous match and two full games in two days is a big ask, but the power and experience of the team overcame Bulldogs.
