Squash
Club News. The
Squash games now have gone over to American scoring, which brings it
into line with the current squash scoring system. This means that a
point is scored for every rally even if you are not serving & the
winner is the first to 15 by 2 clear points. The purpose of this
change was to try & make it more exciting & interesting for
the spectators.
The Summer leagues have now started which means that each league runs
for a few extra weeks allowing players more time to arrange their
games due to the many other activities that draw on every ones time
at this time of year.
The Club
Championship & Veterans competitions are well under
way,
The Championship has
reached the Semi finals with the following players:-
Simon Gray v Chris Chin
Tony Rumbold v Tom Dupuy
The Veterans competition has the bottom half of the draw decided with Clem Heneghan winning through to the Final
after a victory against Keith
Dupuy in the
Semi's.
The top half of the draw is a little way behind as Tony Rumbold has to still play in the
Semi's the winner of the match between Dave Stevens & Martin Wright.
Membership
2010/11 Season
It that time of year again!
All club memberships are now published on the 'Club Info' page
on our website.
SENIOR MEMBERSHIP 2010/11 SEASON
I would like to start collecting membership from the start of summer
training on Tuesday 29th June. The reason is that this
will help with cash-flow during the summer months.
If you go to the 'Club Info' page and then to 'Membership' there is a
Biggy Membership form which can be printed out. I also have plenty of
forms printed out.
The form is very similar to last season, with a couple of minor
changes.
Please complete the form and attach payment and return to me. I will
issue a receipt, and payment can be either cheque, by debit card or
cash.
The membership fee for Senior Players is £75 for the season.
This compares very favourably with clubs of a similar level, (I have
copies of most local club membership fees on request!)
ALSO......Biggy are unique in having FREE sports injury cover
provided by Megan and sponsored by The Health & Safety People.
If you feel that you would like to pay by instalment, this is fine.
Please let me know and we will run a 'tally' book so that memberships
can be paid weekly.
New players need to complete an RFU Membership form, also available
on the 'Club Info' page.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

FRANKIE
THODAY.
It is with much sadness that
Biggleswade Rugby Union and Associated Clubs have learnt that Frankie
Thoday tragically passed away, on Sunday 30th May 2010.
We would like to express
our sincere sympathy and condolences to John, Adrienne, Nathan and
Hattie. Frankie lived his life with a smile and the way his
played his rugby epitomised his life.
He will be sadly missed by
all at the club.
May you rest in peace,
Frank.

ROBERT
"BOB" BAKEWELL.
It is with great
sadness that Biggleswade Rugby Union and Associated Clubs
have learnt that Robert "Bob" Bakewell passed
away last Wednesday the 26th of May 2010, following a
short illness. Bob's playing career as a rapier flanker
spanned three decades and although he inspired the 2nd and 3rd team
as their Captain, his commitment to any side at the
Club was all to evident. He played the game like it was
meant to played and in its finest traditions, he inspired and
exhorted his fellow players and he respected the opposition.
He was
revered at the club as a true Clubman, an entertainer after
the final whistle had gone, a respected friend and above all a
gentleman. The County Cup games that Biggleswade would play on a
Sunday afternoon were closely associated with Bob and his
legendary bugle ! A short sharp blast on his bugle and the crowd
would be exhorted to will the side on. Bob was thrilled to play
in the same "Biggy" side as his two sons, James and William
- such was his level of fitness, he didn't want to just be on the
pitch, he wanted to compete and this he did quite emphatically.
He will be sorely
missed by many at Biggleswade Rugby
Club and will leave a lasting impression. He was and will
always be the legend that is Bob.
We send Gill,
James and Will are sincere condolences and they all remain in our
thoughts.
Simon Rutt.

Biggy new
head coach.
Biggleswade
Rugby Club’s new chairman Steve Matthews has made his first
significant appointment by confirming Luke Bass as the clubs head
coach.
Bass,
currently completing the RFU level three coaching qualification will
be overseeing the Senior players skills and fitness development
programme and will work alongside coaching coordinator Neil Gregory
and the existing coaching team. A playing career that took in
Dunstablians, Stewart & Lloyds and Newquay Hornets started at
Youth level in Cambridgeshire and included representing the county at
U19s level.
“
The chairman has set some tough targets but I am sure that they are
achievable with some hard work” He said, adding that he has been very
impressed with the Biggleswade set up and see’s the appointment as a great
opportunity to develop some of the younger players who have come
through the Colts system.
“Biggleswade
has some exciting young players and I am looking forward to seeing
some of the Youth players progress through to Senior rugby.” Said Bass,
who hopes to attract some more players to the club before the start
of the season.
“As coach at Biggleswade I
feel my biggest challenge will be to change attitudes, I see it as
the coaching staffs job to get the best out of the players by giving
them a environment and direction to develop their skills and
realise their talent, the Biggleswade squads are teams to be proud
of, and embrace rugby values such as integrity, courage, unity and
motivation”
Chairman Steve Matthews
said “ Luke has some good ideas and we are all looking forward to
working with him in this his first appointment as a head coach”
Although predominantly
working with the Senior and U17s players’ it is envisaged that Bass
will be helping develop coaching methods throughout the club.
Senior players are already
training on a Thursday evening with a road run at 7pm followed by a
light ‘touch rugby’ game lead by chairman Matthews.
Luke will present
his vision to all players at an open club meeting on Tuesday 15th
June at 8.00pm, prior to commencing pre-season training on Tuesday 29th
June.
